Start 3ds Max

Open the file provided called Nav Light.max (or use any file or object you have handy) See Fig 1-1

You will notice that at the front of the teardrop shape there is a green mesh. It is the light cover for a boat or aircraft Navigation Light. This is the surface you will apply your material too. Select the green mesh. See Fig 1-2

Open the material manager dialog. See Fig 1-3

Select the first box in the material manager dialog.

Under the Blinn Basic Parameters look in the top left box. In this box is the color controls. The controls will determine the color controls for ambient color, diffuse color and specular color. Next to these to the left is a pair of locks that will lock either specular and diffuse or diffuse and ambient together. Unlock these locks. Both should be gray. See Fig 1-4

The lock is off on the color control dialog under the Blinn Basic Parameters

Click on the specular color box. This will activate the color manager. In the middle whiteness bar, pull the indicator arrow all the way to the bottom. To the right you will find that the color numbers are top to bottom, 255, 255, 255, 0, 0, 255. The end result is a very bright white color. See Fig 1-5

Making adjustments to the specular color

Select the diffuse color box. This will activate the color manager again. In the whiteness box move the arrow upward to a medium light gray. To the right you will find the color numbers top to bottom are, 173, 173, 173, 0, 0, 173. See Fig 1-6

Select the ambient color box. This will activate the color manager again. In the whiteness box move the arrow upward to black. To the right you will find the color numbers top to bottom are, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0. See Fig 1-7

To the right side of the Blinn Basic Parameters section there is a Self Illumination control, leave it alone. Below that is the Opacity control. Set the opacity control to 13. You will note in the material manager the first ball has changed colors and is now nearly invisible. See Fig 1-8

In the controls below the self illumination and opacity and the color controls of the left is the Specular Highlights Controls. Se the Specular Highlights at 120. Set the Glossiness at 10 and Soften to .50. See Fig 1-9.

Apply the material to the green mesh. Save the material to the library. Type in Plexiglas to the default material name and the click on the save to library button just above it. A small dialog box will appear and allow you to name the material something different if you wish to do so. Save the material to you library, close the box. See Fig 1-10
