introduction:
Abstract art is a funny kettle of fish. Basically what it isn't is a faithful representation of objects found in the real world and more of like, well, trying to capture the feelings and emotions of the object. Don't get it, do you? Here's another way. Iron Maiden. Yep, long hair, Eddie, loud guitars. Abstract. Iron Maiden don't reproduce sounds that you can hear in the real world (except maybe demons), but use sound to convey feelings and emotions. Wow, that was deep. So how can you create abstract work in Photoshop? There are literally thousands of ways of doing it, but I'm going to show you just one. Please, please, please during the course of this tutorial, if you feel like going a different way - go with it! The essence here is in creativity and not just following instructions.
requirements:
Adobe Photoshop 6 or higher
target result:

step 1
I've started by opening a new document (CRTL+N) and making it really big. Click the Gradient tool (G) and choose the Radial Gradient, which is the second to left at the top of the screen (circled red). Now you need to drag the Gradient tool a little bit to make black spots. Yours aren't black? CRTL+Z to undo (CRTL+ALT+Z to undo a 2nd, 3rd, 4th...time) and press 'D' on the keyboard to reset the foreground and background colors to black and white. Now do it again. Try not to make them too big or it will get a bit messy.

step 2
Go Filter->Artist->Plastic Wrap. I've given it the maximum values possible. You can see that it's completely changed the image.

step 3
What I have done here is to copy the layer then invert it by going Image->Adjustment->Invert.

step 4
Still with the new layer highlighted, go Image->Adjustments->Hue/Saturation (or CRTL+U) and change the color of the image. Make sure you have the 'colorize' box checked.

step 5
Right, make another copy of the bottom layer, then drag it to the top. Chang the blend mode to Overlay.
