Tutorial: Rigging & Creating Movement Part 2
Now we will create a walking motion for the figure we created earlier. So lets jump right on in.
Tools:
3d Studio Max
Steps:
1. Select any bone in the biped figure. Click on the Motion tab (the wheel), and then on the man highlighted in blue. When you do so the icon will not be highlighted anymore. This puts you in animation mode.
2. Now select the footsteps button at the right of the man icon.
3. Select the multiple footsteps icon and here you can increase the number of footsteps.
4. Click the "Create Keys for Inactive footsteps" icon and then the figure will rearrange itself upright.
5. Hit play, and you will see that the figure walks in a seamless motion.
6. In the Biped panel, hit save. Now you can load that file for any biped figure that you will use in the future. Similarly you can load up an unreal or quake biped here.
7. To remove the biped figure when rendering, click the "Select By Name" button at the top of the screen, and select all of the BIP parts. Next right click on the highlighted bones, and select properties. Then uncheck the renderable box.
In a future tutorial I will write on how to keyframe animation. If you have any questions just leave them in the comments and I'll do my best to respond.

Wow... This is some really great work. I'm used to using the Envelope Mod and working everything out by hand, so I do have plenty of questions... like, can you go into keyframe animation from a biped cycle, just so you can edit the animation to make it not look so bland and generated?
And, with the model I'm working with (an original model), I was wondering if there was a way to move it by the hips.
As far as I know and I tested this out time and time again, there is no way to move the model by moving the help. Yep it makes me a little steamed too.
Maybe one of these days I'll get around to showing people Enveloping and the differences between the two. For people though, I only use bipped map, but for other things like snakes and what not, I would go with enveloping and general bones
I like the tutorial. Now i have to go but im ancious to try it out. I think you have to create a tutorial on keyframing after footsteps, because i want to make an animation that starts walking and then i do keyframing but doesnt work.
