A while ago, I wanted to get rid of braces in a picture, and started to search for tutorials on how to remove braces. I checked a couple of tutorials, but the end result didn’t look as realistic as I wanted it to. The teeth had a gray or yellow shine in it, or the teeth was so blurry, which reduced the quality of the picture. So I played with the tools in Adobe Photoshop and found a better way to remove braces.
Before:
After:
First of all we are going to reduce the size of the braces so we have more clean teeth to work with.
Click on filter, and then liquify.
There are 3 tools here wich we will be using, see below.
Use the hand tool and the zoom tool where ever necessary to enlarge and move the picture around. After the teeth are big enough on your screen, click the “Pucker Tool”. Change the brush size to 10 and the brush pressure to 50. Now, click on the big pieces of metal on each teeth, and hold the click until it can’t go any smaller.
Now the braces are a little smaller, not much, but it gives us a little more teeth to work with.
Now select the healing brush tool, right underneath your tool bar, set it to Screen and Sampled as shown below:
Press alt, and click on the top of the tooth as indicated with the dot below:
Now, paint over the metal, until you have this:
Move on to the next tooth, click on the top of the tooth and paint over it, do it with each tooth until you have this:
Now select the “Dodge Tool”, and set the brush to 10, and the Range to Shadows. Color each tooth to smoothen it a little. Now you’ll have this:
Select the magnetic lasso tool and select the teeth, like this:
Go to filter, blur, and blur.
Don’t deselect.
Go to image adjustments, and the curves.
Give one click in the center of the block and move it up a little, until it looks realistic enough. Now we have this:
Select your brush tool, change the brush to 3 pixels, color to black (#000000) and the opacity to 5. Carefully draw the lines between each tooth, now we have this:
The rest is up to you, use the dodge and the burn tools to correct anything that might not look realistic enough, like the corners of the lips etc., remember don’t be scared, experiment!
This is what I ended up with:
